Florida & Bahamas: 2 Year Anniversary

For our 2 year anniversary we decided we were going to take a big trip to Florida and the Bahamas.  We ended up paying for the trip in July but never had the chance to take it so when Jason finished his spring semester at SUU we finally had a chance to leave.  We got a really great deal on the vacation, which included 3 days 2 nights in Fort Lauderdale, FL, a one night cruise to the Bahamas, 3 days 2 nights at Island Seas Resort in the Bahamas and then a 1 night cruise back to Florida.  We had a midnight flight from Vegas on May 4th with a layover in Cincinnati, Ohio.

When we landed in Florida we got a rental car, a Mazda 6, and found our way to the hotel....after having to stop and get directions. :)  The hotel wasn't the greatest but it was pretty clean.  The included buffet was not that tasty though and Jason ended up putting his foot through the tile in the shower.  It was pretty funny.   Since we didn't have any plans the whole trip we just picked a main road and headed East and ended up on Commercial Beach.  It was the first time either of us had seen the Atlantic Ocean and the white sand so it was pretty awesome.  There were tons of shells too. We got some ice cream nearby and ate it while we watched the ocean. It was heaven.  We found some good places to eat around the area including an Italian Pizza place. It was really greasy pizza but pretty good.

On our second day in Florida we were required to do a resort tour in West Palm Beach. We had some breakfast with our guide, Connie, and toured the area.  We saw Peanut Island and some really cool trees.  We also saw a dog with sunglasses and got to feed the fish at the pier.

After the tour we met up with Leah and Jason at Atlantic Beach.  They have lived in Florida for a long time and we have never had the chance to see their place.  Janny was also in town for a wedding so we had a great time...3 sisters all together in Florida. We were missing everyone else though.  The water was perfect and we had a good time.  After the beach we relaxed at Leah and Jason's place and then had some Asian rice bowls for dinner. They were yummy.

Leah has a baby bump.. :)
May 7th was the day of the cruise.  We were really anxious.  Since we didn't have to board until 4pm we spent a bit more time with Leah, Jason and Janny for lunch. We made our way to Port of Palm Beach and got our car parked.  Boarding was a bit of a challenge though. We had to wait in long lines and they ended up booking us into a room with a double bed when we paid for a queen. We weren't very happy and had to go on and off the boat a few times before they figured it out for us.  We had dinner early in the evening.  It was pretty fancy but the cruise was very casual so we didn't have to dress up too much.  We are not the partying type so after dinner we just sat on deck and watched the ocean.  It was very relaxing.

We docked in the Bahamas the next morning...on our 2 year anniversary!  Our first view of it was a little shocking because we first saw the industrial side of the island.  When we started to disembark it was pretty sunny. By the time we got off the ship and down ramp it was raining cats and dogs. It felt like a monsoon.  We were soaked in just a few seconds.  After we passed through customs we took a bus to our resort.  We weren't able to check in to the room for a few hours (they are on a very relaxed schedule) so they held our luggage and we headed straight for the beach.  It was breathtaking.  The sand was pure white with no shells and the water was very warm and clear.  They had lounge chairs and towels for us so we just hung out on the beach the whole day, except for to eat and we could see the ocean from where we were eating.  It was heaven.

Once we got checked into our room. We got cleaned up after the beach and took the shuttle into Port  Lucaya for our anniversary dinner. We ate at a Greek restaurant called Zorbas. It was pretty good but it was kind of cheap american/bohemian.  The port had a quite a few shops that we looked through, then we had a taxi take us to the grocery store and then to the resort again. The fare was $35!  It was crazy.
The power went out in half the island on that night. It was pretty funny. Luckily it wasn't off for too long.

What is this?

The only good dessert in the Bahamas...

First Taxi....and driving on the wrong side of the road. Eeek!

On Wednesday we spent all of our time on the beach and we were already a lot burned from the day before even after putting on sunscreen multiple times.  We took the shuttle to the nicer resort on the island and went to their beach it was terrible!  There were rocks everywhere and they cancelled our snorkeling excursion because of rough seas. We were pretty bummed so we headed back to our cheap and nice beach and enjoyed the day snorkeling with the gear we brought with us. Jason taught me to snorkel in the pool. It was pretty fun but snorkeling in salt water was a bit different. We ate dinner at the resort and stayed on the beach until the sun went down. It was fabulous....especially not having to worry about cell phones, work or school.  We totally forgot to bring our watches too so we had to keep asking people the time. It was awesome.

I beat Jason at shuffle board EVERY time :)

Beautiful

On Thursday we woke up to a monsoon rain. It was crazy, but it only lasted about 10 minutes.  Then we hung out on the beach for as long as we could before we had to board the cruise ship again.  We were very sad to leave.  We could have spent a whole week in the Bahamas and wouldn't be sad about it.

We bought watches....no tax.

We will miss the white sand.

We boarded the cruise and didn't really want to leave. We had a fun time with the entertainers and I even had to get on stage with the comedian. It was super embarrassing.  If you would like to know the whole story you can ask and I might tell you.  We reached US soil again on Friday morning and spent a little bit more time at Commercial Beach before we headed to the airport. We didn't think relaxing on the beach would make us tired but it did.  We had a wonderful anniversary and look forward to an eternity more of them.
